Below are the Social Security Administration's eligibility requirements for disability benefits:
Unable to work presently. Income of less than $1000/month. Inability to complete work previously done due to serious medical condition. Inability to perform other types of work because of said condition. Presence of disabling condition recognized by the Social Security Administration.
You can apply for disability in any of the following ways:
Apply online at www.ssa.gov.
Apply by phone at 1-800-772-1213.
Visit a Social Security office.
Once approved, Social Security will begin paying disability benefits on the sixth month you are disabled. The amount you are paid is determined by the amount of earnings you have that are covered by Social Security. Once you are able to return to work, your disability benefits will stop.
You are entitled to file an appeal if your claim is denied. Just like the application process, your appeal can be filed online.
